From the Andes to the Manu Lowlands

Route: Lima/Cusco/Abra Malaga/Machu Picchu/Cusco/Manu cloud forest (Cock-of-Rock Lodge)/Amazonia Lodge/Amazon Manu Lodge/Puerto Maldonado/Lima

Highlights: Birding the Andes and famous Machu Picchu ruins and environs, plus all altitudes of the Manu area with a list of almost 1,000 species of birds.

Day 1:

Arrive in Lima, transfer to hotel.
Overnight at Hacienda Hotel****

Day 2:

Visit the Villa marshes. Birds we will be looking for in this typical coastal marshes are Peruvian Thickknee, Ducks, Great Grebe, Gray-hooded Gull, Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, etc.

Day 3:

Fly to Cuzco first thing in the morning and transfer by bus to the hotel in the town of Ollantaytambo At a lower elevation than Cuzco, we will barely feel the elevation and will begin to acclimatize while doing some easy birding in the Valley. Good birds to find are Giant Hummingbird, Green-tailed Hummingbird, Green-tailed Trainbearer, etc.

Day 4:

Bus trip to Abra Málaga, 45 Km from the Village of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, dry forest, mountain scrub forest, we can fine birds like White Tufted Sunbeam, Chesnut – Breasted Mountain finch, Royal Cinclodes, Tit like Dacnis, etc. the area is home to same bird species that cannot even seen in Manu rout. Coming back to Ollantaytambo to catch our late Train to Aguas Calientes, transfer to hotel.

Day 5:

Visit the famous Machu Picchu ruins with birding on the walk up to the Puerta del Sol. Here we will try to get the endemic Cuzco Brush-Finch and Inca Wren, and other specialties like the Tricolored Brush-Finch and Masket Fruiteater.
Birding along the trail tracks. The Sclater’s Flycatcher and the Inca Wren are probably our target birds, but we will have plenty of activity with Tanager flocks.

In the afternoon, we will return to Cuzco by train.

Day 6:

Morning visit to the Huacarpay lakes in Cuzco. And birding around the Saccsayhuaman ruins. The afternoon will be left free for a city tour, shopping, or relaxing.

Day 7:

Leave early for Manu National Park and the famous Manu Road. We will bird through typical Andean scrub and fields on our way to the highest part of Manu National Park, at the Acjanaco pass, with breakfast and lunch on the road. After some birding at tree line we start our descent through cloud forest on the Manu road, arriving at the Lodge just after sunset.
Overnight at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge or Manu Cloud Forest Lodge.

Day 8:

We will spend two days birding the cloud forest along the road above and below the Lodge.
Overnight at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge or Manu Cloud Forest Lodge.

Day 9:

Continuing down the Manu Road, we will bird our way through subtropical forest to Atalaya, The road between Pilcopata and Atalaya has good birds like Military and Blue Headed Macaw, and Pheasant Cuckoo, crossing the Alto Madre de Dios River to the Amazonia Lodge.

Day 10/11:

We will spend two days birding habitats from the lodge at the base of the Andes. We will cover the extensive trail system in search of the almost 600 species recorded in this lodge.

Day 12:

Travel by boat to the Amazon Manu Lodge, where we will arrive after 7 hours boat trip Down river. Overnight at Amazon Manu Lodge.

Day 13/14/15/16/17:

We will spend 5 full days at the Amazon Manu Lodge with a great trail system that includes both terra firme and palm swamps, Bamboo forest, Camungo and Blanco Lakes, with the access to the Macaw Clay Lick and Mammal clay Licks(That visit Tapir, Peccaries, Deer, Monkeys and birds like Guans, parakeets, curassow and Chachalacas ) and the Canopy Tower in Blanquillo close to the Camungo Lake.

The trails will give us access to several known territories of hard to get birds, follow mixed species flocks and spend time in flooded forest. We will also visit the bamboo in the terra firme for almost all of the specialists of this unique habitat, for Crested Pygmy Tyrant, Flammulated Bamboo Tyrant, Rufus Headed Woodpecker, look for the Rufous-fronted Antthrush in the Heliconia thickets, walk in the Tapir lake trail in the primary forest looking for Black Tinamou, Semicollared Puffbird, Pavonine Quetzal and visit a typical large oxbow lake Cocha Blanco and Camungo. Since we will be based at the comfortable lodge.

Day 18:

Afternoon 3 hours boat trip with some birding on the river will take us to the Colorado village and continue our trip to Puerto Maldonado by 5 hours bus trip, arriving at late afternoon, sleeping at Paititi Hotel.

Day 19:

After breakfast we go for birding in the secondary forest, going to the airport where we will take a flight to Lima, spend the night at Hacienda Hotel****

Day 20:

Transfer to the airport for international flight.
